This course focuses on studying the dynamics and complexities of contemporary Asia by critically analyzing topics related to economics, politics and governance in the region. Specifically, the course examines the ideas of the State, nationalism, Asian values, security; culture, values and social change, governance as a form of capitalism; ethnicity, religious renewal and identity, the rising middle class and societal transformation. It will also look at the governance of regional and global arrangements with a focus on the sets of institutions and organizational structures that determine the rules of the game and the nature of the relationship amongst the key actors.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Appreciate key economic, political and cultural debates and issues related to the region.
  • Understand the dynamics of political and cultural changes and country responses to globalizing dynamics.
  • Understand the nature of governance and trade in a historical and contemporary context.
  • Be able to undertake comparative analysis of a range of Asian countries.

Activities in the course include:

  • Weekly seminars with industry experts, government representatives and academicians from local think-tanks.
  • Weekly field trips to heritage and cultural sites, government bodies and business organizations.
  • A one week internship experience in a local business organization.
