The educational experience in the United States is amongst the best in the world, and is often portrayed by the media as fun, exciting, stimulating, and challenging. An American degree can also add value to your professional development, enhance your career, and broaden your horizons by exposing you to the latest technology, training, state-of-the-art research, and a melting pot of cultures from all over the world.
One need not have to travel far to experience all this, as the reputed American Degree Program (ADP) at HELP University is one of the liveliest departments on campus.
Besides being able to participate in the various clubs and sporting activities organized by the university itself, the ADP department has its own students clubs such as the American Flyer, American Eagle, TechnoScience, and the Student Congress.
These student clubs such as the American Eagle organizes events each semester to introduce students to major American holidays such as Thanksgiving, Halloween, Independence Day, and St Patrick’s Day, so that they are familiar with these festivals once they are on American soil. The American Eagle also throws welcome parties for new students joining the program, and organizes industrial trips, and charity events, so that students learn event and project management skills.
The club also organizes the popular Actuarial Science workshops for students to teach and coach them on the Probability paper from the Society of Actuary, United States.
The ADP department is known for its close knit community. Seniors volunteer as mentors to their juniors and often help them with their mathematics, and other subjects. Staff and lecturers are easily available for consultation and support.
The slick student magazine, American Flyer, which currently only publishes a fantastic copy each year, allows students to contribute various articles, book and movie reviews, and opinion pieces, university profiles, and event highlights during their academic year.
The American Degree Program at HELP University is well known for being particularly strong in Actuarial Science and Engineering, which gives you an indication of the students’ level of interest in Math and Science. The popular TechnoScience Club which is open to all students in the ADP organizes annual science fairs and quizzes, and mathematics competitions between all departments in the university. Students often go on industrial visits to various companies, and class activities to encourage team building and bonding.
The Student Congress was set up to help students in all aspects including their studies, student life, and environment. It is also the mediator between the students and the university when any issues arise, and to represent the student body as a whole. The club was also set up to encourage students to socialize with each other through various activities such as the ADP Ball, Orientation, and other social events.
Students who pursue the American Degree Program are able to complete 1.5 to 2 years at HELP before transferring to the United States, Canada, or even Australia to complete their degrees, which makes it affordable so that they can live the American dream.
Many students have successfully transferred to top universities in the United States and Canada, such as Boston University, American University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Ohio State University, University of Kentucky, Ohio University-Athens, University of Minnesota-Minneapolis, Purdue University-Lafayette, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Syracuse University, to name a few. The University of Waterloo in Canada is a popular choice for ADP students, and a number have been admitted to the University of British Columbia, and Simon Fraser University in Canada amongst many others.
Mervin Wilfred D’Souza, an international student from Kuwait, won admission to Duke University in North Carolina to read Mechanical Engineering in Spring 2016. He scored 2350 out of 2400 in his SAT, which puts him in the highest category of scorers in the world, amongst the top 1% in the world out of the more than 1 million students worldwide who took the SAT exam in 2015
For Mervin, it represents the pinnacle of his dreams, as he had worked very hard to achieve his CGPA score of 3.95.
“I just thought it would be interesting to see this part of Asia and I choose HELP from the internet and I was not disappointed. Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful the lecturers are, they make sure you understand the subject and the teacher-student ration is low and there is a lot of individual attention,” said Mervin, who intends to specialize in mechatronics, which is a combination of robotics and mechanical engineering.
HELP University’s American Degree Program is the preferred transfer program to the University of Waterloo in Canada for students majoring in Actuarial Science. The university has been named Canada’s most innovative university for 17 years in a row by Macleans’ annual university rankings and has topped such categories as Best Overall and Most Innovative.
The University of Waterloo is home to the largest post-secondary co-operative education program in the world, which allows students to be employed in careers related to their field of study by some 3,500 employers. The co-op students take a break from their studies every four months to go on four-month work terms, which means those taking the co-op pathway take an additional year, a total of 4 years 8 months to complete, compared to those going through the regular system.
Best of all, students who have completed their SPM or equivalent are able to join the program right after high school. The American Degree Program at HELP University offers many popular specialisations; the most popular being engineering, and actuarial science. Other specialisations include psychology, business, biosciences, computer science, mass communication, arts and design. For those who are unsure as to what they would like to major in, they are able to pursue a liberal arts program which will allow them to pursue various subjects and opportunities in the first two years before making a decision.
