The HELP University-Jinjang Utara Rumah Panjang Literacy and Numeracy Programme is aimed at uplifting the social and educational status of the Rumah Panjang community in Jinjang, Kuala Lumpur, for children aged 6-12 years old.
The Numeracy aspect under Phase 2 was launched by Adam Chan, Executive Director of HELP International Corp and Patron of the overall project. In his speech during the Launch at HELP, Adam said,
“For the Maths in English Project, 64 children have signed up and from the placement tests taken prior to registering for the programme, it is evident they are in great need of support. Since they cannot afford tuition, HELP has launched this Numeracy programme based on the Primary School Assessment Test (PSAT) curriculum to provide some remedial lessons to these underprivileged children.”
In December 2015 HELP University launched an English literacy project known as Jolly Phonics for 200 children from Jinjang Utara Rumah Panjang, and 20 impoverished youths from SMK Jinjang Utara.
The project was carried out for one and half years with classes almost every week at HELP University since March 2016 and was brought to successful completion. The next stage in the Literacy Project is the Grammar workshops which will begin in March 2017.
During the launch of Phase 2, the Maths in English Project, the children were present and also representatives from ACTS Global Networking, Pastor Jonathan Ambalagan and Pastor Mary Ramamoothy, who have been working with HELP to undertake the community projects.
Among the children present that day, Thinakaran*, 10 years old, who is fatherless and comes from a poor and broken family and who has never had the opportunity to go to school. Since he attended some Maths classes with HELP, he feels HELP has some very good teachers and this was his comment,
“I’m so excited that I can finally learn to write numbers”
The 64 children will initially be exposed to the mathematics curriculum for Standard 1-3 as the placement tests revealed the majority of the children have only proficiency at beginner/foundation level.
Upon completion, it is hoped the children will develop the skills necessary to understand numeracy and thus be able to do simple mathematics.
The launch was also attended by the sponsors and Adam thanked them for their support: Las Carretas Mexican Restaurant and Pub, Goodman Classic, KKL Trading, IM Hair and Beauty, Pokka Corporation (S), Kedai Logam Maju Jaya, Perfect Food Manufacturing, Yakult, Edward See Noor Yee, Lau Jing Qi, Harpreet Kaur and Abinesh Thangarajah.
