Enjoy family time during weekends
“I’ll do it during the weekend lah!”, a phrase that has become a one-size-fits-all response in Malaysia when working on our assignments, projects, answering emails or simply a phrase we use to knock off items on our to-do list.
Now, if you are like most Malaysians; often interrupted and weekends being your only viable option for study and work, it might be beneficial to consider time-out during the weekends. It may not be in your best interest to keep working during the weekend. Make sure you set aside some time each weekend to focus on leisure activities, or you will be setting yourself up for resentment of your work and school and will inevitably burnout.
Here are four key benefits to taking weekend time off:
1. Rest and recovery: Our bodies, minds and spirits were made to work in cycles of work, rest and sleep, rest and sleep. It is important to get enough rest during the weekend to ensure productivity. What may seem unbearable while attending class or work on a Friday, is rather pleasant on a Monday. This is due to your better frame of mind on Mondays after your well-deserved rest.
2. Being present: It is important to be present in the leisure activities during the weekend. Whether it is “shopping day with mummy” or “taking my younger brother to the park”, it is important to be present with the people you love and to enjoy the time that you have off university and work. Leave your worries behind and enjoy the “now”.
3. Connection: It is important to consistently leave weekend time open to connect with friends and family; you will increase the opportunities to form, sustain and deepen meaningful relationships.
4. Making progress: Ever wondered why your closet never gets organized or why there a slice of pizza under your bed from two weeks ago? It could be because you don’t leave enough space in your schedule to get anything done at home because you’re always focusing on school or work. It is time that you change the way you think and tell yourself, “I can do it”. Once you have this idea in your head, you will be amazed at how much you can accomplish during the weekend – and how much better you will feel about yourself.
So take advantage of this long weekend to spend time with your loved ones. And please, get rid of that two-week-old pizza under your bed.
