PROGRAM SYNOPSIS:

The program emphasizes on integrating basic psychological knowledge in the learning experience as well as helping participants master the basic and advanced micro-skills involved in the helping process. Participants will also be taught how to use the structure of a well-formed interview with the micro-skills, some theories and techniques of career counselling as well as how to us psychometric testing as part of their career conversations. Mastery of these processes will enable the participants to help guide people into generating new ideas that lead to resolution of their personal and career issues.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
  • To help participants deepen and sharpen their skills for more effective conversations
  • To identify issues pertaining to career related challenges and explore possible approaches for solution.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the structure of a counselling interview in a helping relationship.
  • Demonstrate these skills when relating with people in their families or workplace due to a better understanding of themselves and others.
LENGTH OF THE PROGRAM:
  • 3 full days from 9 – 5 pm: Theories and Microskills in Counselling Module
SYLLABUS:

General Areas of Coverage

  • Theoretical Conceptualization
    Module 2 looks at selected theoretical approaches to counselling. Participants will be exposed to different ways in which to conceptualize and work a problem through using the Humanistic, Cognitive-Behavioral, Solution Focused philosophies of counselling.
  • Microskills in Counselling
    An interactive aspect of training that equips the individual with the prerequisite knowledge and skills used by counsellors in gathering information and enhancing the counselling relationship. Individual learns and practices skills in attending, reading body-behavior, empathic understanding, encouraging, summarizing, questioning and intervention techniques.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS WILL GAIN

Regardless of knowledge or skill level, participants will gain foundation knowledge required to enhance counselling skills. Participants will gain a greater understanding of applying counselling skill in individual and group settings and how to become accustom to professional issues that relate to confidentiality and other ethical issues. Through lecture and group discussion, this workshop will provide participants with effective solutions in dealing with difficult clients, group cohesion and conflict, working with resistance, and effective leadership skills which will help peer supporters become effective in what they do.
